The Department of Teaching, Learning and Sociocultural Studies is announcing a position for an Associate or Full Professor faculty position that focuses on the learning and teaching of students from linguistically and culturally diverse backgrounds in the context of Early Childhood Education. The appointment is a tenured position at the Associate or Full Professor level effective August 2018. Our outstanding interdisciplinary and diverse faculty demonstrates excellence in research and teaching and a deep commitment to promoting educational equity and social justice. Faculty research interests include: teaching and teacher education, content area instruction for bi/multilingual learners; anthropology of education; Indigenous knowledge systems, education and language reclamation; language policy and planning; literacy processes and pedagogy; STEM education; environmental and sustainability education; early childhood education; children’s and adolescent literature; and new literacies. Our location in the southwestern United States and our long history of involvement with the education of minority youth throughout the state and in the border regions also offer many opportunities to collaborate with others on engaged, transformative research with bilingual and multicultural communities.
For this Early Childhood Education position, we are looking for a well-established senior scholar with national-level recognition who focuses on one of more of the following research areas: child development, family and community, early childhood math and/or science, technology, and/or language and literacy. We are searching for individuals with a strong bilingual and multicultural background in the learning and teaching of young children from linguistically and culturally diverse communities reflective of the US Southwestern border region. Teaching responsibilities include, but not limited to, undergraduate course work in Early Childhood and in Early Childhood Education methods and curriculum, including Reading, Language and Literature, Math, Science, Play and Human Development or other related areas with emphasis from birth to early grades. The candidate will be expected to contribute to graduate level programs addressing issues of diversity and community-based education. Applicants should demonstrate strong grounding in early childhood settings (i.e., have engaged in field-based research), and teaching experience at the early childhood and/or elementary school level is required. A successful record of university-level teaching is required. The College of Education at the University of Arizona fosters collaboration among faculty. Participation in research with undergraduates is a College priority and is likewise encouraged.
Commitment to high-quality instruction in a student-centered environment with emphasis in Linguistic and Culturally diverse populations is essential. Appointees are also expected to conduct an externally funded program of research that has led to recognition as a nationally-known early childhood educator. Enthusiasm for working in a multidisciplinary environment and interest in active and collaborative learning, the instructional use of innovative technology and digital media, and hybrid and online learning approaches are advantageous.
