The Department of Human Development & Family Studies (HDFS) at UNC Greensboro invites applications, nominations, and inquiries for the position of Department Chair. The position begins July 1, 2019.
The HDFS Department, one of 9 departments and programs within the School of Health and Human Sciences, is ranked as one of the top HDFS graduate programs in the country. The Department’s core values comprise equity, integrity, community, and intentionality, and the faculty aspire to live up to those values. The department is exceptionally diverse, with 26 full-time faculty members, over 700 undergraduate majors (60% students of color), including 280 online majors, 150 undergraduate minors, and approximately 100 graduate students (33% students of color, and 7% international students). The Department offers undergraduate and graduate programs (MEd, MS, and PhD) with core areas in: early childhood education, human development, family studies, and sociocultural contexts. Strong faculty research programs are supported by substantial external funding, which has ranged from $5.1 million to $6.6 million annually (totaling almost $30 million) over the past five years.
The Chair will provide strategic and visionary leadership to advance teaching, research, and service/outreach missions of the Department and the School, while promoting HDFS’s unique role and mission to the external community. As a skilled leader and effective administrator, the Chair will embrace the diversity of UNCG and its historical mission, and continue to foster this value in the work of HDFS.
Candidates must hold a doctorate in Human Development and Family Studies or a closely related field and be eligible for tenure at the professor rank. Candidates must demonstrate a commitment to and/or skills in guiding and supporting diversity, equity, and inclusivity among faculty and/or students. Additionally, the successful candidate must have previous administrative experience, which may include, but is not limited to, chairing a department, directing an undergraduate and/or graduate program, or directing a center/program.
Preferred qualifications include: A dynamic and visionary leadership style characterized by the following: Collaborative/participatory decision-making, flexibility, and effective communication with internal and external stakeholders; Expertise in two or more HDFS core program areas (early childhood education, human development, family studies, and sociocultural contexts) based on educational background, professional experience, or scholarship; Demonstrated capacity to make contributions to teaching, research, and service as a senior faculty member.
