PSYCHOLOGY AND CHILD DEVELOPMENT— Assistant Professor at California Polytechnic State University, San Luis Obispo. The Department of Psychology and Child Development within the College of Liberal Arts seeks applicants for one full-time, academic-year, tenure-track, Assistant Professor in Child Development starting September 10, 2020. Candidates for the position must have a PhD in child development, developmental psychology, clinical/counseling psychology, human development, or a related field by the time of appointment. Preference will be given to candidates with interests in child development in the context of adversity (e.g., child maltreatment, poverty, discrimination, trauma or related areas). Salary is commensurate with qualifications and experience. Initial appointment is for two years, subject to renewal.
Candidates must also show a strong commitment to teaching excellence and provide evidence of professional activity that keeps them abreast of knowledge and developments within their discipline. The position involves teaching undergraduate courses in Child and Adolescent Development, Child Abuse and Neglect, and/or Research Methods. Additional courses may include: Children’s Development in Diverse Cultures, Interpersonal Relationships in Childhood and Adolescence, and Family Psychology. Ideal candidates will possess a commitment to broadening the scope of child development to include traditionally underrepresented groups, as demonstrated through research, teaching, and/or course content. Consideration will be given to candidates with interest in providing support for the development of on-line offerings.
Although Cal Poly is primarily a teaching university, our faculty are expected to balance teaching with an active program of research/professional development (including publication), student supervision and advising, and participation in service activities at the department and college/university level. The teaching load averages 12 units per quarter (with course load reductions in each of the first two years to help establish one's professional development activities), with correspondingly reasonable expectations for scholarship and service.
