SDSU is defined as a “Doctoral University, High Research Activity” within the Carnegie Classification and in 2014 was designated an Innovation and Economic Prosperity University by the Association of Public and Land-grant Universities. As the state’s 1862 land-grant university, SDSU plays a key leadership role in the state and the region in conducting research, disseminating knowledge, supporting innovation and business incubation, forming partnerships with industry, and advocating for economic growth and development. SDSU awards graduate degrees through 15 Ph.D. and 33 Master’s programs and has the most active university research program in the state with more than $67 million in annual research activity.
About the Position
Reporting to the Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs, the Dean is the College’s chief academic and administrative officer. SDSU seeks an energetic academic leader with practical strategic vision, significant successful administrative experience as well as outstanding academic credentials and strength in fostering excellence in teaching, research/scholarship, and engagement.
The College serves 1,900 students with a variety of undergraduate and graduate programs. The College consists of the departments of Consumer Sciences, Counseling and Human Development, Health and Nutritional Sciences, and Teaching, Learning and Leadership. The four departments offer 16 different majors, 19 different minors and certifications, and 13 nationally accredited programs. The College also serves students within BHSU-Rapid City. This center is a satellite facility in the beautiful Black Hills region of South Dakota that specializes in bringing graduate-level education and career-enhancement opportunities to nontraditional students and educational professionals. The mission of the College is to enhance human potential by centering on the improvement of human life and community through the promotion of mental, physical and financial health.
Qualifications
The successful candidate will have an earned doctorate and a distinguished record of academic performance consistent with appointment as a tenured full professor in a discipline appropriate to the College. The next Dean will be a visionary person of proven leadership ability, high integrity, a strong record of successful research and scholarship activity, as well as successful administrative leadership in a complex environment and a commitment to furthering the mission of a land-grant university. The Dean will be an experienced, entrepreneurial, creative, and collaborative leader, with a deep appreciation of the diverse disciplines represented in the College, and have a passion for providing an outstanding educational experience to all students.
Other preferred qualifications include:
A documented commitment to student success that includes a commitment to undergraduate and graduate education with an emphasis on excellence in teaching, research and scholarship;
Entrepreneurial leadership and the ability to effectively communicate the mission and vision of the College and connect with areas of opportunity inside and outside of the University;
Significant experience with resource management, complex budgets, and the development of strategic fiscal plans;
Ability to champion the creation and implementation of innovative interdisciplinary research and educational programming to enhance the profile of the College;
Capability to identify, recruit, and retain strong faculty and staff, and to develop the leadership abilities of these individuals;
Develop collaborations with other units on campus, external community-based partnerships and relationships with individual donors, foundations, corporations, and continue collaboration amongst human services agencies, public K-12 schools in the local community and across the state of South Dakota;
Experience in guiding, College-wide or discipline specific accreditation activities;
A commitment to shared governance, transparency in management, and data-driven decision making;
Outstanding oral and written communication skills, listening skill, and excellent interpersonal skills.

The Search Committee invites nominations, applications (letter of interest, resume/CV, and the names and contact information of five or more references), or expressions of interest to be submitted to the search firm assisting the University. Review of materials will begin immediately and continue until the position is filled. It is preferred, however, that all nominations and applications be submitted to the search firm prior to March 1, 2021
