The Department of Human Development and Family Studies invites applications for a 10-month, tenure- track position at the assistant professor level to begin August 23, 2021. Successful candidates will have the ability to teach a variety of human development and family studies courses. Preference will be given to candidates with a strong background and interest in child and family program development, implementation, and/or evaluation.We seek a teacher-scholar whose responsibilities include teaching, scholarly activity, student advising, and service to the department, college and university. Candidates from historically marginalized populations are especially encouraged to apply.
The Department of Human Development and Family Studies focuses on applied research, teaching, and service. From an ecological perspective, we prepare scholars and professionals in their understanding and appreciation of the complexity and diversity of individuals and their interrelationships. The educational process encourages critical thinking and the application of knowledge to improve the quality of life for individuals and families across the life span.
Required:
Earned doctorate or ABD with degree awarded by date of hire with at least one graduate degree in child development, human development and family studies, or closely related discipline;
Competence in subject matter as evidenced by relevant course work;
Evidence of teaching effectiveness;
Evidence of potential for successful research and/or scholarly activities;
Affiliation with relevant professional organizations;
Evidence of effective communication and interpersonal skills;
Ability to perform the essential functions of the job with or without reasonable accommodations.
Preferred:
A strong commitment to undergraduate teaching and supervision of student research;
A scholarly agenda focused on applied research;
Evidence of ability to teach a variety of human development and family studies courses;
Relevant professional experience working with children and families;
Demonstrated commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion through teaching, curriculum development, scholarship focus and/or service;
Strong background and interest in child and family program development, implementation, and/or evaluation;

About Central Michigan University
The Human Development and Family Studies (HDFS) Department includes 16 faculty positions, 12 of which are tenured and tenure-track, serving approximately 660 majors and minors. We offer academic programs in Child Development, Family Studies, and Early Childhood Development and Learning (including a teacher certification program).
CMU's HDFS department maintains a Certified Family Life Education (CFLE) approved undergraduate program as designated by the National Council on Family Relations. We also house CMU’s Brazelton Touchpoints Professional Development & Research Center, the first of its kind in Michigan. The Early Childhood Development and Learning degree programs within HDFS are the first in the state of Michigan to be granted NAEYC accreditation. The HDFS department also includes the NAEYC accredited Child Development and Learning Laboratory (CDLL), a Reggio-inspired early childhood program serving approximately 72 children and their families in a Head Start and tuition-based preschool.
